The first time I went scuba diving, it was around the Andaman Islands and I was 13. I remember wishing I could stay down among the coral and the creatures there forever. This picture book follows the journey of one such young diver as she not only resolves to move down to the sea forever but also to take on a completely new identity for herself.

 

The spreads of this book are hand-painted, with gouache, ink, pencil, a dash of pastel, and a hint of fantasy. Many of the images and characters here are inspired by my prior study and research about the reef system surrounding the Lakshadweep Islands of India, and of course, by a bit of my own underwater adventures.
